If you’re slightly less of an enthusiast, then it might be worth waiting for the new experience app to be generally released. With a bit of work, you’ll have a device that can play all of your 4K rips (FEL included). My server can handle that just fine so it’s doing its job to make the experience seamless. So, for example, anime with SSA subs plays natively on my iPad but on my Roku the Plex server will transcode to burn-in those subtitles for me.

Even with a remux of a 1080p is it noticeable too? If it’s just a cheap tv with a soundbar then I’d say probably not much of a difference. As for 1080p remux you’ll notice improvement in audio quality provided your 5.1 setup is connected via HDMI and not toslink/optical as optical does not support lossless audio. All my media is on a nas and the nas cannot transcode movies while watching them – it is not powerful enough to do that, like majority nases arent.
